Child Care Programs

Programs developed and utilized by the staff of Cobourg Day Care Inc. are designed to meet the needs of today’s families by providing care for children in an environment which is consistent, age appropriate, caring and full of positive learning experiences.  Programs are reevaluated regularly to reflect changes within the Day Nurseries Act and ideology in Early Childhood Education.

Our qualified staff will present programs that enhance your child’s level of development while remembering that play is a child’s way of learning about the world he or she lives in, about themselves and those around them.

Each staff member is required to plan programs for the children based on themes which may include activities relating to letters, (ie.Jolly Phonics) colours, numbers, dinosaurs, seasons, holidays, etc. Each program is planned on a weekly basis and these programs are posted on the Parent Bulletin Board outside of each classroom for parents to view.

The playground provides the children with an essential opportunity to develop their love and appreciation for the outdoors. The playground is designed to help meet the needs of the whole child. We are required by law to take the children outside for two hours each day, weather permitting. We do request that you provide your child with proper clothing for outdoor play.

Sleep Time
We are required under the Day Nurseries Act to provide the opportunity for children to rest.  The Center has designated sleep areas which are equipped with cots and linens for each child.  The children in each group rest for approximately two hours.  Those children who do not require the full two hours are provided with an early riser program after one hour of rest.  This program involves quiet activities such as reading of books, colouring, creative etc.

The Learning Environment
The Centre provides a special learning and play environment for young children.  Our staff recognizes and responds with respect to the dignity of each child and their capabilities.  The Centre is divided into six groups of children based on each child’s age and developmental stage.

The playrooms are set up with various learning centres for the children. These include:

Art Area
Art activities, which are organized to help the child develop their creative and sensory abilities, include painting, gluing, cutting, woodworking and clay.  It is our philosophy that it is the process and exploration of the materials, not the final product, that is important to a child’s development.

House Area
The dramatic play area is designed to help the child understand themselves, the people important in their lives and the world around them.  This area includes such props as dolls, cribs, kitchen area, dress-up clothes, occupational hats and telephones.

Table Top and Cognitive Area
The children choose activities in this area such as puzzles and small building sets giving them the opportunity to experiment, problem solve, be creative and to develop pre-reading, fine motor and cognitive skills.

Block Area
This area is designed to give a child an opportunity to build creatively, gain physical balance and coordination and to learn social, mathematical and spatial concepts.

Science Area
The science area is set up to help the child understand the world around them through the development of curiosity and the power of experimentation.

Large Muscle Area
This area is planned to give the children an opportunity to develop their large muscle coordination and strength through such activities as climbing, balancing, riding bikes, throwing balls, building with hollow blocks etc.

Sand and Water Area
The children use the medium of sand and water in a variety of experiences to develop their understanding of volume, displacement, measuring, ability to pour and as a sensory experience.

Music Area
The music area enhances the child’s awareness of sound, rhythm, tones and promotes creative development.  Music is presented at the learning centre for individuals, small groups or at circle time.

Field Trips
Field trips are conducted to places of interest in the local community during the course of the year.  These excursions serve to expand your child’s knowledge and appreciation of the world he or she lives in.  All parents will be given advance notice of when and where a field trip is to take place, as well as how your child will be transported to the field trip destination.  Parents are required to provide written permission for their child’s participation in the day’s activities. Field trip expenses are included in your fees.

Educators and Staff
Our team of nurturing and caring staff believe that supporting children's interests and curiosity will further inspire the learning process. Through observing, documenting and engaging with children, the educators plan curriculum that is both meaningful and rewarding. Our nutrition staff provide wholesome food and play a vital part in our programs.

We are also fortunate to have co-op and college students placed with the Centre on a regular basis to provide experience for our future early childhood educators. These students are not included in the child to teacher ratios. Their presence further enhances the personal attention each child receives.
